Summer is right around the corner and with that comes sunshine, happiness, patio season, and most importantly, beer. I was born and raised in Milwaukee, WI where it is basically a right of passage to head “up north” to your cabin and spend the weekend drinking beer around the fire or on a boat. As I got older and was able to finally drink beer (legally), I discovered that its magically delicious. A perfect weekend for me includes spending time with friends while playing board games at a brewery’s tap room. I could do this for hours!
It seemed appropriate to highlight some beers I’ve been enjoying lately. Here are my top 5 summer beer favorites!
Samuel Adams Rebel Grapefruit IPA
Now, I know what you’re thinking, a grapefruit IPA?! What!? Hear me out. I’m a HUGE IPA fan and, unlike most people, I actually like the bitter tasting beers. I will admit that my first few sips of the Grapefruit IPA left me a little skeptical, but as the taste lingered in my mouth and I had a few more sips, I began to appreciate the freshness of the citrus and its refreshing tone. I’d definitely recommend this if you’re looking for a new summer treat.
Lakefront Fixed Gear
Like I said, I’m a native Milwaukeean so it is only natural that I represent my city with a beer staple in my fridge. Lucky for you, Lakefront is available all around the country, and even in other countries! Another IPA, Fixed Gear is really bold with just a hint of citrus. This is not as heavy of an IPA, so you won’t feel as
tipsy full after just one. I like to pair this with a nice fish fry on a hot summer night.
For those who are looking for a bit of a lighter beer, Surly Brewing Company’s #MERICA beer is perfect for you. This pre-prohibition lager is incredibly flavorful and enjoying a nice cold one leaves you feeling refreshed on a hot summer day. If you ever get a chance, head over to Minneapolis, MN where Surly brews their beer and spend some time at their AMAZING tap room/restaurant. They have a beautiful outdoor space and it’s the perfect place to enjoy a fire on a summer night.
New Belgium Watermelon Lime Ale
Again, stick with me on this one. I am usually turned off my exotic flavors being mixed with my beer but I had to try this one because it sounded crazily disgusting. You guys, I was so wrong! New Belgium never disappoints and this new Watermelon Lime Ale is like a party for your taste buds. It’s refreshingly different and has a perfect balance of bitterness and lightness. I would recommend this if you’re not a huge IPA fan but are still looking something with a bit more of a kick. This will soon be your summer favorite.
Summit Summer Ale
I haven’t had a chance to try a lot of Summit Brewing Company’s brews, but I recently tried their Summer Ale and was pleasantly impressed. It’s a light, clean beer with a nice bitter aftertaste. This is a good beer if you’re looking to just hang outside for a long time and drink a lot of beer. It’s not too heavy and you won’t be feeling it the next morning.
